Pogues Bootlegs 1991
xx-xx-91
A Rainy Night In Soho Also circulates on video (see Videos). xx-xx-91? BBC1 TV - Top Of The Pops with Kirsty MacColl 4 min. Fairytale Of New York Also circulates on video (see Videos). There are two versions of Shane and Kirsty doing "Fairytale Of New York" on Top Of The Pops. Both versions are usually labeled 1987. However, this version could not be in 1987. Shane has a thick beard, and rounder looking face. I would place the second version sometime in 1991, but I am not positive. Note that for this (91?) version, the screen actually does say "1987." 15-Mar-91 Le Zenith, Paris, France 8 min. French TV The Sunnyside Of The Street / Sayonara This also circulates on video (see Videos). 16-Mar-91 Le Zenith, Paris, France 69 min. Bootlegs from 1991 are generally not very good, but this one is definitely worth it just for this song. This show is also circulates on video (see Videos). There is an unknown song performed in the middle of "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" This title of this is show usually incorrectly referred to as "Illario Festa dell Unita, Silano, Italy". I believe that "Silano" was a mis-reading of "S.Ilario" (which is in the province of Reggio Emila and is approx. 13km from Parma). The Festa de l'Unità is the annual communist celebration in Italy, originally organised by the newspaper l'Unità ("Unity"). It is often misspelt "festa dell'unità" ("Unity party"). 10-Jul-91 Prato Stadio del Lungo Bisenzio, Firenze, Italy 78 min. with Danny Heatley (aka Pope) on percussion Streams Of Whiskey / If I Should Fall From Grace With God / Boys From The County Hell / Young Ned Of The Hill (Terry Woods vocals) / Rain Street / Donegal Express / Sayonara / The Repeal Of The Licensing Laws / The Body Of An American / Gartloney Rats (Terry Woods vocals) / Summer In Siam / Thousands Are Sailing (Philip Chevron vocals) / Medley / Sunnyside Of The Street / Dirty Old Town / The Sick Bed Of Cuchulainn / Yeah,Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah (Spider Stacy vocals) / The Star Of The County Down (Andrew Ranken vocals) / Sally MacLennane / The Irish Rover The Pogues play "Donegal Express"
"Live On Rain Street", "Sayonara", "Drunken Boys", "Bad Lieutenant", "Streams Of Whiskey" 12-Jul-91 Rock Festival, Leysin, Switzerland 60 min. with Danny Heatley (aka Pope) on percussion Streams Of Whiskey / If I Should Fall From Grace With God / Boys From The County Hell / Young Ned Of The Hill (Terry Woods vocals) / Rain Street / Sayonara / Repeal Of The Licensing Laws (reads "Battle Of Brisbane") / The Body Of An American / Summer In Siam / Thousands Are Sailing (Philip Chevron vocals) / The Sunnyside Of The Street / Dirty Old Town / The Sick Bed Of Cuchulainn / Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah / Fiesta / Sally MacLennane without Andrew Ranken This show has been released on five commercial bootlegs, a semi-official CD (with two different covers) and DVD audio under the following titles: "Live On Rain Street" - released by The Swingin' Pig Records on CD (TSP-CD-108) and LP (TSP 108) which was made on both black and red vinyl.
"Sayonara" and "Drunken Boys" CDs/LPs are missing the songs "Streams Of Whiskey", "Fiesta", and "Sally MacLennane." The "Drunken Boys" CD is also missing "The Sunnyside Of The Street." Both the "Sayonara" and "Drunken Boys" LPs/CDs add four songs at the end of the 12-Jul-91 show: "Sally MacLennane", "A Pair Of Brown Eyes", "The Sick Bed Of Cuchulainn", and "Maggie May." These four songs were taken from the Pogues singles "If I Should Fall From Grace With God" and "Fairytale Of New York" where they were released as live B-sides from the 19-Dec-87 Barrowlands Ballroom show. "The Sick Bed Of Cuchulainn" from this (12-Jul-91) show was broadcast on MTV and circulates on video (see Videos). The photo's of Shane used for the covers of "Live On Rain Street", "Sayonara" and "Drunken Boys" are taken from the television broadcast. 15-Jul-91 Brixton Academy, London, England 102 min. with The Chieftains and Danny Heatley (aka Pope) on percussion The Pogues: If I Should Fall From Grace With God / Boys From The County Hell / Sayonara / Young Ned Of The Hill (Terry Woods vocals) / White City / Rain Street / Thousands Are Sailing (Philip Chevron vocals) / The Sick Bed Of Cuchulainn / Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah / Sally MacLennane
Probably the best bootleg from 1991. The Pogues/Chieftains mix is great. The medley of songs after "Dirty Old Town" is definitly the highlight of the show. They play a mixture of traditional tunes, including a series of rags by early 20th century American composer Scott Joplin - it goes on for 9 minutes! There's also nothing like the Pogues and Chieftains playing "Drowsie Maggie" - the song Shane based his own "Squid Out Of Water" on. 21-Jul-91 Harlow Music Festival, Harlow, England 63 min. AKA "Live At Harlow Town 1991" Streams Of Whiskey / If I Should Fall From Grace With God / Young Ned Of The Hill (Terry Woods vocals) / Rain Street / Sayonara / Repeal Of The Licensing Laws / The Body Of An American / Summer In Siam / Thousands Are Sailing (Philip Chevron vocals) / Medley / The Sunnyside Of A Street Dirty Old Town / The Sick Bed Of Cuchulainn / Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah / Star Of The County Down (Andrew Ranken vocals) / Sally MacLennane / Waxie's Dargle Also circulates on video (see Videos). 22-Jul-91 Open Air Fest, Vienna, Austria 34 min. Also circulates on video (see Videos). I'm not sure what exactly Billy Bragg does during this show, but he is there. 25-Aug-91 Pukkelpop Festival, Hasselt, Belgium 73 min. Streams Of Whiskey / If I Should Fall From Grace With God / Cotton Fields / Young Ned Of The Hill (Terry Woods vocals) / Rain Street / Sayonara / Repeal Of The Licensing Laws / The Body Of An American / White City / Gartloney Rats (Terry Woods vocals) / Summer In Siam / Thousands Are Sailing (Philip Chevron vocals) / The Sunnyside Of The Street / Dirty Old Town / The Sick Bed Of Cuchulainn / Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah / Star Of The County Down (Andrew Ranken vocals) / Sally MacLennane 30-Aug-91 Womad Festival, Yokohama, Japan 69 min. There are some interesting things that happen between songs - even a few insults. Also circulates on video (see Videos).
