Pogues Bootlegs 1983 - 1984

27-Nov-83
100 Club, London, England
55 min. Soundboard?

Repeal Of The Licensing Laws / Dark Streets Of London / Muirshin Durkin / Rocky Road To Dublin / Greenland Whale Fisheries / The Band Played Waltzing Matilda / Battle Of Brisbane / Me And Bobby McGee (Jem Finer vocals) / Down In The Ground Where The Dead Men Go (end of song missing) / The Auld Triangle / Dingle Regatta / Boys From The County Hell / Streams Of Whiskey / Poor Paddy / Waxie's Dargle / And Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue (Cait vocals)

The earliest known Pogues bootleg This is a great show - fun to listen to, with some interesting moments and rare songs. Unfortunately, the sound quality fluctuates throughout. Six tracks from this show were released on 7 inch vinyl (see below).

"Live At The 100 Club"
27-Nov-83
100 Club, London, England
16 min. Soundboard?

Dark Streets Of London / Muirshin Durkin / Rocky Road To Dublin / Greenland Whale Fisheries / Battle Of Brisbane / Me And Bobby McGee (Jem Finer vocals) /

This 7 inch vinyl EP has been released with two different covers. The first version was issued in a black & white card sleeve by an unknown manufacturer and pressed on orange, purple and darke blue vinyl. 66 copies were supposedly pressed on orange vinyl and 500 on purple vinyl and an unknown number on dark blue vinyl. However, judging by the number of orange vinyl copies that have been offered for sale in recent years, I suspect that many more than 66 copies were made. The second version was released in 1993 by "Britannia Waives the Rules" and came in colour wrap around sleeve featuring a picture of Shane and was also pressed in orange and purple vinyl. The sleeves of both versions claim that this was the "3rd ever gig" but this is probably incorrect. Neither version has a catalogue number on the sleeve or record label, however, both versions have "FUNN-40-A" and "L-39895" scratched into the run out groove on the A-Side and "FUNN-40-B" and "L-39895-X" on the B-Side. The sound quality is good, but not excellent.

"Almost Live"
Nov 1983 - April 1984
London, England
55 min.

Muirshin Durkin / Battle Of Brisbane / Dark Streets Of London / Rocky Road To Dublin / Muirshin Durkin / Dirty Old Town / Repeal Of The Licensing Laws / Down In The Ground Where The Dead Men Go / The Band Played Waltzing Matilda / Me And Bobby McGee (Jem Finer vocals) / Streams Of Whiskey / Poor Paddy / The Holy Ground / Waxie's Dargle (cut off)

Another very early recording. The crowd is almost non-existant. Possibly earlier then "Live At The 100 Club" but certainly before May 1984 as by then "Rocky Road To Dublin" had been replaced by "Transmetropolitan". Features the only known live performance of "The Holy Ground" plus a very early version of "Dirty Old Town".

17-Apr-84
The John Peel Show, BBC Radio 1, London, England
15 min.

Streams Of Whiskey / Boys From The County Hell / The Auld Tiangle / Greenland Whale Fisheries

The first John Peel Session was recorded at the BBC Maida Vale Studio 5, London on 10-Apr-84 and first broadcast on 17-Apr-84. (N.B. The Lost Decade states that the first John Peel Session was in February 1984).

May 1984 - The Pogues release their first single "Dark Streets Of London"
xx-May-84
"BBC Session - First Single"
BBC Radio 1, London, England
20 min.

Greenland Whale Fisheries / The Auld Triangle / Streams Of Whiskey / Boys From The County Hell / Dark Streets Of London / The Band Played Waltzing Matilda

This one is a bit of a mystery. The cassette came to me with an original "Pog mo Thoin" harp sticker on the j-card and the tape is marked "BBC Session - First Single". Looks like a John Peel Session. If anyone can supply any more info on this, please let me know.

16-May-84
Unknown Radio Session
15 min.

Dark Streets Of London / The Auld Triangle / Streams Of Whiskey / Greenland Whale Fisheries

No other information - if anyone has any more details, please let me know. Again, it looks like a John Peel Session.

31-May-84
Kingston Polytechnic, London, England
47 min.

Repeal Of The Licensing Laws / Greenland Whale Fisheries / Muirshin Durkin / Transmetropolitan / Battle Of Brisbane / Kitty / Me And Bobby McGee (Jem Finer vocals) / Down In The Ground Where The Dead Men Go / Dark Streets Of London / Sea Shanty (very rare) / The Auld Triangle / Dingle Regatta / Boys From The County Hell / Streams Of Whiskey / Poor Paddy

You can tell that certain songs like "Transmetropolitan" are in their infancy. Best version of "Down In The Ground..." - lots of good screaming. The first 3 seconds or so of "Sea Shanty" is missing - I'm not sure if it's like that on all versions. Shane quote: "It's good to be in Jamaica."

August 1984 - The Pogues record "Red Roses For Me" at the Elephant Studios in London.
20-Sep-84
Janice Long Session
15 min. FM Radio

Down In The Ground Where The Dead Men Go / Poor Paddy / Dingle Regatta / Boys From The County Hell

The last few seconds of "Poor Paddy" gets cut off.

07-Oct-84
Guild Hall, Portsmouth, England
28 min.
Support for Elvis Costello

Repeal Of The Licensing Laws / Greenland Whale Fisheries / Muirshin Durkin / Jesse James / Boys From The County Hell / Kitty / Me And Bobby McGee (Jem Finer vocals) / The Battle Of Brisbane / Transmetropolitan / Poor Paddy

25-Oct-84
City Hall, Newcastle, England
32 min.
Support for Elvis Costello

Repeal Of The Licensing Laws / Greenland Whale Fisheries / Kitty / Dark Streets Of London / Boys From The County Hell / The Auld Triangle / Me And Bobby McGee (Jem Finer vocals) / Transmetropolitan / Poor Paddy / Battle Of Brisbane

This show is often mis-labeled as 25-Jun-84 or 26-May-84. However, the correct date it is definitely 25-Oct-84. Cait refers to the famine in Ethiopia which was first brought to the public's attention by Micheal Buerk on BBC News that day and ultimately led to Bob Geldoff and Midge Ure organising Live Aid.

12-Dec-84
The John Peel Show, BBC Radio 1, London, England
15 min.

Whiskey You're The Devil / Danny Boy / Sally MacLennane / Navigator

The second John Peel Session was recorded at the BBC Maida Vale Studio 5, London on 4-Apr-84 and first broadcast on 12-Dec-84. The song "Sally MacLennane" from this session is NOT the same recording released by BBC Records on the Various Artists CD and LP "21 Years of Independent Radio 1" but it sounds just like it and is an early and interesting version of the song.

17-Dec-84
The Cricketers, Kennington, London, England
56 min.

Greenland Whale Fisheries / Repeal Of The Licensing Laws / Boys From The County Hell / Whiskey You're The Devil / Kitty / Dark Streets Of London / Transmetropolitan / Sally MacLennane / The Auld Triangle / Sea Shanty / Dingle Regatta / Poor Paddy / Battle Of Brisbane / Waxie's Dargle / Streams Of Whiskey / The Band Played Waltzing Matilda

Released by FTA Records on the LP "Press-Ganged" (FTALP02).

"Greenland Whale Fisheries" (part two)
18-Dec-84
Labour Club, Newport, Wales
36 min. Soundboard

Greenland Whale Fisheries / Repeal Of The Licensing Laws / Boys From the County Hell / Whiskey You're the Devil / Kitty / Dingle Regatta / Muirshin Durkin / Poor Paddy / Battle Of Brisbane / Waxie's Dargle / Streams of Whiskey / Dark Streets of London / Sally MacLennane

Released by Money-Maker Records as the second part of the CD (labeled Live in England, November 1984). Interestingly, the catalogue number is MR 001 on the cover and TPCD 544 on the CD! The first part of this CD features the show from Rockmagasmet, Orebro, Sweden 10-May-85. Two slight variations exist - the outer and centre are silver on original version and solid black on the re-released version, font sizes are also different.

"Happy New Year With The Pogues"
31-Dec-84
Harp Lager's ICA Rock Week
Brixton Academy, London, England
51 min.

Greenland Whales Fisheries / Repeal Of The Licensing Laws / Boys From The County Hell / Whiskey You're The Devil / Navigator / [A weekend with the Pogues] / Auld Lang Syne / Dark Streets Of London / Transmetropolitan / Sally MacLennane / The Auld Triangle / Dingle Regatta / Poor Paddy / Battle Of Brisbane / Waxie's Dargle / The Band Played Waltzing Matilda

They play into the New Year. Interesting show...there's a draw in which a member of the audience wins a "free weekend with the Pogues in Dulwich"!
